Today is International Day of Older People, a global event established by the UN in 1990 to highlight the opportunities and challenges of an ageing population.

This year’s UK theme – Building Belonging: Celebrating the power of our social connections – reminds us that meaningful relationships matter at every age.

The day falls during Homeshare Week, our national campaign celebrating real Homeshare households and the benefits for older people, younger sharers, and their families.

Homeshare connects older householders with younger adults who provide around 10 hours a week of companionship and light support in return for affordable accommodation. These arrangements build trust, friendship and belonging. They help older people stay independent while giving families peace of mind.

For many, later life brings challenges like retirement, changing health, or the loss of loved ones. Homeshare offers a practical way to stay connected, while also tackling the housing pressures younger people face.

If you’d be interested in Homesharing or know someone who would, find your local Homeshare provider here.

Inspired to set up a Homeshare programme in your local area, get in touch with us, so that more people can benefit from Homeshare across the UK.

This International Day of Older People, communities across the UK are encouraged to strengthen social connections. Whether through local events, befriending schemes, or Homeshare, every act of connection counts. Use the UK Network of Age-friendly Communities map to find out what’s happening in your area.
