This Homeshare Week, we’re highlighting the difference Homeshare can make in people’s lives. From providing companionship to offering practical support, Homeshare helps older people remain independent while giving families peace of mind. Arthur’s* story from Homeshare York is a perfect example of this.

Sarah, Arthur’s daughter, first heard about Homeshare through a newspaper article, and a friend had also spoken highly of Homeshare York. She felt it would be ideal for her father, who lived alone. Arthur was becoming less steady on his feet but remained independent. He needed companionship at home and help with heavier tasks like taking out the bins and gardening. Living in London, Sarah wanted reassurance that someone would be there for him.

Homeshare York provided clear communication, practical advice and ongoing support – both in preparing for the first meeting and throughout the arrangement. Arthur completed the application form with Sarah’s help and reviewed several profiles of potential Homesharers, choosing the ones he wanted to meet. Mandy was his first choice, but she wouldn’t be available until after completing her studies, so she visited Arthur monthly in the meantime to build a relationship.

Arthur then met Bohdan, and they agreed to a six-month arrangement until Mandy could move in. Bohdan had discovered Homeshare through the Ukrainian hosting scheme. As a newcomer to the UK, he was looking for affordable housing and companionship.

Both Arthur and Bodhan completed the induction process and got on well. A move-in date was set, with Sarah staying involved to support both her father and Bohdan. Bohdan settled in well, enjoying laughs and conversations with Arthur. Arthur taught him various household tasks, while Bohdan helped with chores and gardening. When Arthur’ mobility declined, Bohdan communicated regularly with the family, reassuring them that Arthur could remain independent with support.

When Mandy was ready to move in, the family recognised Bohdan wanted to stay, so they offered him the option to remain as a lodger. The house had enough space for both, and with Mandy working shifts, Bohdan’s presence ensured Arthur continued to receive support.

Sadly, Arthur passed away at the age of 96. The family found comfort knowing his final year was filled with companionship. He enjoyed the company of both young Homesharers, who remain close family friends.

Sarah, a strong advocate for Homeshare in York, shared the success of the arrangement, saying,

“We were thoroughly delighted with the introductions to both our Homesharers, who have become good friends. They really made all the difference to the last year of his life, and we are very grateful.”

Arthur’s story reflects what Homeshare is all about – building friendships, offering peace of mind, and helping older people remain independent in their own homes.
